You may occasionally see what appears to be duplicate contact records in Cognism. In most cases, these are not true duplicates but separate records representing different professional profiles.
This article explains the most common reasons why the same person may appear more than once.
The Contact Has Multiple Active Positions
Some professionals work for more than one organisation at the same time.
When Cognism identifies active employment at multiple companies, a separate contact record may be created for each position.
This allows you to view and prospect against each employment independently.
The Contact Has Multiple Roles Within the Same Company
A person may hold more than one active role within the same organisation.
For example, someone may be both:
- Founder and CEO
- Managing Director and Head of Sales
- CTO and Co-Founder
Where separate professional roles have been identified, Cognism may display multiple records.
The Contact Has Multiple LinkedIn Profiles
Some professionals maintain more than one LinkedIn profile.
This may occur when:
- A previous profile was replaced.
- Multiple professional profiles are actively maintained.
- Separate profiles exist for different roles or businesses.
If multiple LinkedIn profiles are associated with the same individual, Cognism may create separate contact records.
Reporting a Duplicate
If you believe two records represent an unintended duplicate, you can report the issue by clicking the Flag icon next to the contact's email address or phone number in the Cognism Chrome Extension.
The Cognism data team will review the records as part of its ongoing data quality process.
