The Industries filter helps you narrow your Contact and Company searches to organisations operating in specific industries.
You can include or exclude industries, search using standard industry categories, or use advanced industry classification codes for more precise targeting.
Filter by Industry
To filter your search:
- Run a Contact or Company search.
- Expand the Industries filter.
- Select one or more industries from the list.
You can also use Exclude Industries to remove specific industries from your search results.
Search Using Industry Codes
For more granular targeting, expand the advanced filters to search using industry classification codes:
- SIC (Standard Industrial Classification)
- ISIC (International Standard Industrial Classification)
- NAICS (North American Industry Classification System)
These codes are useful when searching for companies within a specific market segment or standardised industry category.
Multiple Industry Mapping
Many companies operate across more than one industry.
By default, Cognism searches across all industries associated with a company to maximise search coverage.
If you want to return results based only on a company's primary industry, disable the Multiple Industry Mapping option.
This can help produce more targeted results when companies are classified under several industries.
Use Exclude Industries to Refine Results
Some industry categories include multiple related industries.
For example, if you search for FMCG, you may also receive results from closely related industries such as Retail.
If your results are broader than expected:
- Keep your primary industry selected.
- Use Exclude Industries to remove industries that are not relevant to your search.
This allows you to narrow your results without rebuilding your search.
Example: If you're searching for FMCG companies in Food & Drink but also receive results from Retail, add Retail to Exclude Industries to refine the results.
Grouped Industry Categories
Some high-level industry filters, including FMCG and Manufacturing, represent groups of related industries rather than a single industry.
As a result, searches using these categories may return companies from several associated industries.
If you need more specific results, consider:
- Using Exclude Industries to remove unwanted industries.
- Searching with SIC, ISIC, or NAICS codes for more precise industry targeting.
